Creating Alarms for Your Probes

Setting up alarms on your probes is the basis of your notification and reporting processes. For all of the different SNMP variables that you have set up on your probes, you have the option of setting up alarms that when certain thresholds are met, they will set the device status to Ok (green), Warning (Yellow), and Error (Red), which status will be displayed visually in the network summary, and the various list views throughout the application. Once established, these alarms are also the foundation of the notification system. This section is a general overview, as a more detailed guide will soon be available to address the entirety of this process.

1. In your desired probe, select the "Alarms" menu option on the right.

2. Like the SNMP Variables screen, this has a list of alarms at the top, and a simple set of fields at the bottom. The alarms are driven off the SNMP variables, expressions (not covered in this guide), and message variables (also not covered it this guide). To get started, you can create a name for the alarm, along with a message that will be sent to anyone who is assigned the alarm through notifications.

3. The "Return Code" will also trigger the visual change for the device between the green, yellow, and red colors.

4. The Expressions are driven off the relationships between 2 different variables. Other guides will get into more detail in setting up expressions for probes and alarms.

6. By selecting the variables and expressions below the fields, you can drag SNMP variables that you have previously defined into the fields above to create the desired expressions.

7. After you have built your expression, and filled in the other fields, you can click the "Save" button and your new warning will be added to the list of alarms associated with the probe.

While this is only a brief overview, this is the foundation for being able to set up your direct notifications.
